The talented Michelle Budge of typetypetype (I love her stuff!) is giving away 20 of her incredible Christmas cards, and that doesn't make me feel angry at all! Maybe it is the beautiful weather, or the fact that the rotting jack-o-lanterns have already been thrown away.

The winner of the Jeni Gochnour gourd is Meg who said, "I talked my 3-year-old out of being Batman AGAIN, and into being a fly (cutest costume from Children's Place) since his baby brother is a spider. My kindergartener says he wants to be a ghost. Not as creative as some other people...but I don't get much choice anymore.Those gourds are AMAZING!! So cute, I really need it for my house. One of our most amazingly talented artisans, is Miss Jeni Gochnour. Jeni is a true artist- several years ago started turning dried gourds into the funkiest little friends to spruce up your holiday decor. You may remember us bragging about her on our stint on Studio 5.

Each one is first hand painted, and then she burns them to add further character and charm, and finally embellishes them with wire, bottle caps, and any cool thing she has laying around. No two are the same- each is a treasured work of art.

Jeni has her own Autumn Art Open House coming up this weekend and she is giving away one of her fantastic gourds to one of this contest's lucky winners.

Also....

Petersen Family Farm, a local favorite, is setting up shop in SoDa Row on Saturdays from 10 am until 5 pm and Mondays from 3 pm until dusk. They’ll have all the fall favorites on hand, including an assortment of pumpkins in all shapes and sizes, ornamental gourds (you will have to beat Jeni to 'em), corn stocks, and Indian corn cobs.

If you are buying your pumpkins at the grocery store- you are robbing your family of a fantastic outing. You can never have too many pumpkins, gourds, corn stocks, or hay bales to decorate your home. If the response (and the weather) are favorable, they’ll continue to set up additional dates in October.

The other lucky winner will get to pick out a pumpkin for everyone in the family (limit 4) to take home. Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered. That was a fun contest! I share a lot of favorites with many of you, and look forward to reading so many great recommendations! I love books. Especially children's books. I have heard about people who shop at Nordstrom and the clothing or shoe salesperson knows their name. This is me at Barnes and Noble. They cheer (and my husband cries) when they see me come in. They roll out the red carpet and send me special invitations to sales- they even stay open until midnight some nights so that I may purchase a highly anticipated book. (I don't know how all of those other people knew about the party too...)

Last year I wanted everyone to see the amazing books, authors, and illustrators that I love. It is not enough that I inflict my every passion on my family, friends, and neighbors- now Oh Sweet Sadie! has to get it too. So I sell books. My favorite children's books. Sometimes I love a book because of the language- the rhyme, the cadance, the 'read aloud' factor. Sometimes I love, love, love the illustrations- especially when they mix mediums- ie. computer graphics with hand painted embellishments. Sometimes I just love a book because you are suppose to. It is a classic and everyone needs it on a shelf. Every child should know that the quiet old lady is whispering 'Hush', or that Max's dinner was waiting for him, and it was still hot.

So you know when you first start crushin' on a guy- you are totally freaked out that he might not like you too? And then that he might not like you as much as you like him? So you are both playing it cool, not really letting the other one know how you feel? This is Oh Sweet Sadie's relationship with Daybreak. We love them. We NEVER play it cool. We are the needy, annoying girlfriend saying, "I love you, do you love me? do you? do you?"

Turns out- they do. THEY DO! They let their guard down and told us how much we truly mean to them and they want our relationship to be eternal- well, at least through the Holidays.

Which means we need to be exclusive. We finally are at that point in our relationship. All other shows are cancelled. We will be hosting the Oh Sweet Sadie! Holiday Show the week before Thanksgiving. We will help you get a jump on your Christmas shopping- and in the mood to party!

This show will be everything you loved- the Pre Sale (join the mailing list to be invited), the wide isles (strollers!), the urban-New York City-warehousey feel, the live music, the AMAZING vendors and artisans- and nothing that you hated. (No 1 hour lines. I really, really hope.) But LONGER. We will run the show from Wednesday, November 18th to Saturday, November 21st.

Mark your calendars- we will continue to have weekly giveaways until the show. A new contest will go up every Monday... can you believe the great stuff people are just giving away?? Spark! The Event CONTEST CLOSED

This is something Heidi and I are really excited about. Really excited. Spark! is a creative event/ seminar that will be hosted and taught by the best of the best. If you haven't heard these names before- check them out. You will be dazzled by their resumes and left breathless at their talent.

Elizabeth Kartchner is an amazing crafter who was named 'Scrapbooker of the Year' by Creating Keepsakes Magazine in 2007. She also is a frequent guest on Channel 5 morning show "Studio 5." She will be a guest coming up on October 2nd. (Wait! I know someone else who has been a guest on Studio 5... who was that?)

Jefra Starr Linn is a brilliant photographer. Her work has been sought out by galleries in Utah and Santa Fe, NM, as well as Getty Images. She has been involved in nearly every type of photography, except war documentary or crime scene. She even shot a major politician. (Which one Jefra?) Jefra has taught photography workshops around the country. She says, "I love the instantaneous reward of photography. I love how it reveals a person and a moment. I love how it can tell a story in one frame. I love how it grabs an instant in time that will never been seen again.” Sneak a peek at how cool she makes us look!

Margie Romney-Aslett travels the world to teach scrapbooking for Creating Keepsakes- in fact she is in Japan right now.

Rhonna Farrer works with Wacom as a Penscrapper and with Shutterfly on their Creative Board Advisers. She has worked with Two Peas in a Bucket and Better Homes & Gardens' Scrapbooks, Etc. Magazine team.

The best thing about these women is that they are real. They are moms who were blessed with amazing talents and a willingness to share. They are thoughtful, kind, fun, visionary women and I cannot wait to spend the first weekend in November with them. Heidi and I wouldn't miss Spark! for all the nursing babies in the world.

"It's too late to 'pologize"

Dear friends and customers of Oh Sweet Sadie!,

Heidi and I would like to apologize for the unreasonable line on Friday. We know many of you had to wait to check out during the show, but we heard that on Friday some of you had to wait 45 minutes. That is not acceptable to us and we will do our best to make sure it never happens again. So, for our holiday show we will adding at least one register, maybe two.

Please forgive us, we are learning as we go. We thought adding one register for this show would more than accommodate any rush or line that we had during the Spring shows. We so appreciate you coming to the show and supporting it by bringing your friends and family. We want it to be a pleasant, if not amazing experience, and that kind of thing makes it a nightmare. We know, we have kids too.

Here's to hoping you give us another chance this Holiday season.

The darling Channing Kasallis of Chancakes contacted us and offered to make an Oh Sweet Sadie! cake for our fall show. She delivered the most beautiful and tasty cake, some of you may have seen it on the cake display at the entrance. I don't have a picture- Channing, do you have one? (She did- here it is!)

My mom is a caterer and I have been to enough weddings to form a firm opinion that cakes can either look amazing or taste fantastic, but you never get both. Well, Channing's cake proved me wrong. It was so yummy I was literally eating it with my hands. (That doesn't surprise most of you.)

On her site it says, "We are Utah's number one place for beautifully personalized cakes of all kinds that taste as amazing as they look. We specialize in wedding cakes, groom's cakes, bridal and baby shower cakes, birthday cakes, and any other event you would like to have cake. Our cakes are made with the freshest of ingredients (no cake mixes here!) and are known to be craved by even those who detest cake! Our dense, rich flavors range from Chocolate Chocolate Chip to White Chocolate Raspberry, Spiced Carrot Cake to White Chocolate Butterscotch, Pineapple Upside-down Cake to Pumpkin Spice, and everything in between. Tiered cakes, bundt cakes, shaped cakes, and cupcakes.... we do them all!!"

Channing is generously giving away a custom cake (about 25 to 30 people serving size) to a lucky winner.

We were pleasantly surprised to be approached Jolley Photography to do a give away on our blog. They are a pillar in the South Jordan community, and I love looking at the pictures they have up while picking up my Cafe Rio fix. We feel elevated in class just by associating our name with theirs.

Nothing can replace a memory. However, portraits can sometimes help us keep the memory fresh in our minds, particularly when we lose a loved one. Losing a loved one often helps us re-prioritize our life and go for dreams.

Such is the case for Bruce and Tammy Jolley. In 2000, each lost a spouse to cancer. They met at a bereavement group and three years later got married. Photography was one of the couple’s common interests, and both had master’s degrees in photography. Tammy had previously worked for a photographer doing retouching and in-house printing. With a fresh understanding that life is too short to let dreams go unfulfilled, Bruce and Tammy opened Jolley Photography in 2003.

In the beginning, Jolley Photography provided all types of photography, but in the last year and a half, the company’s focus has narrowed to children, families and high school seniors. This is the type of work that Bruce and Tammy most enjoy.

Bruce tells me the South Jordan company is unique in that it’s the only studio in the state operated by a husband and wife team with advance photography degrees. Both he and Tammy are also certified professional photographers. Despite the young age of their business, the Jolleys have already won awards locally, nationally and internationally.

The Jolleys make a unique team, Bruce says. Having worked for a master photographer for 20 years, Tammy pays attention to details while Bruce focuses on creating dynamic lighting. The finished product is artistry and portraiture at its finest.

Bruce and Tammy are pleased with the response to Jolley Photography thus far. It has been warmly received. Bruce is gearing up to do more work photographing high school seniors, his passion. He would like to see the studio continue growing but plans to maintain a single location with just himself and Tammy as proprietors.

They are willing to give away a sitting and a 11x14 portrait taken in their studio. Can you imagine having that done in plenty of time for Christmas cards?

Sometimes I really hate blogger. Especially when you are working with a lot of pictures. Where do all the extra spaces come from?

A lot of great things today- lets get started.

Laura Stringham of Lou Lou Designs makes the cutest little clippies, big clips, mini clips, headbands, and all things cute. At the show she will also be selling smaller and larger clips made from silk flowers and fabric covered buttons.

Laura is giving away this is a set of 8 "mini clips" in a rainbow of fall colors. The mini clips are 1.25" long and great for holding back bangs, adding color to a pony tail or holding back the finer hair. The clips are made from snap clips wrapped in designer ribbon, hand cut felt and are hand sewn.

3. Little Duchess
New to Oh Sweet Sadie! is Ashlee Kennedy of Little Duchess. Ashlee says, "The idea for Little Duchess started when my mother stumbled upon some beautiful vintage holiday images. My mother and I love to decorate for the holidays and immediately wanted to somehow display them. After searching around for awhile we found a company that would apply the images to canvas. The results turned out beautifully. Since that time we have added nursery rhyme, fairy tale, home decor, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, valentines, Easter, and patriotic prints to out line. We also have added 11 different frames to complete the look of the canvas pieces. We hope you will find the whimsy and magic that my mother and I did the first time we saw these incredible images."

Jill Woolsey of Papers and Thread will be selling her nightgowns at Oh Sweet Sadie! They are made out of tricot and are so soft. The bottom has a ruffle and lace. Oh Sweet Sadie! will have some pretty cool neighbors for the couple of days we are on SoDa Row. Let me tell you about a few, and then I will tell you what they are oh so generously giving away to 8 (EIGHT) lucky winners.

First is Black Diamond Gymnastics. Black Diamond Gymnastics of Park City have opened their second location right here on SoDa Row. I have to say that gymnastics have never been something I have thought about putting my kids in- until I spent 5 minutes on their website. My oldest son, eight years old, is a freak on our trampoline. He can do back flips until he is sick, front back front back front flips, and a crazy twisty flip that probably has a really cool name. So what do I read on Black Diamond Gymnastics website? They have a Big Air program. The Big Air program is especially for skiers, boarders, skaters, etc. The curriculum focuses on trampoline and tumbling instruction designed to enhance core strength, air awareness and self-confidence while learning the proper technique of flipping and twisting gymnastics. Is that the greatest? I am so excited, we are signing up like, yesterday.

Don't worry if your son isn't as advanced as mine (snicker behind my hand) they also have dance, cheer and martial arts. Right Star Academy, an academic preschool and tutoring program, is integrated into the facility as well. These people have their crap (sorry Heidi) stuff together.

Remember Breathe- a yoga studio? They share the space with Black Diamond.

Next you have Guy's Barbershop owned by Mr. Guy Dumas (he doesn't pronounce the S in Dumas.) Guy graduated from Westpoint as Infantry Officer in the Army, but always wanted to be a barber. A couple years ago he made his dreams come true (and his parents worst nightmare- just kidding- I don't know that) when he became a licensed barber. This stuff is so vintage it is unbelievably cool. He even has a traditional barber shop bar light, like the one shown above. He offers traditional straight razor shaves for $5.00 and haircuts for $15.00 in his one chair shop.

You can tell Guy has a minor in philosophy, he told me he likes a one chair shop because then you always know who is going to cut your hair/ shave your face. And it doesn't matter who you are- a punk 14 year old or the big man on the block- when you come to Guy's you all sit in the same chair. I would pay $15.00 just to continue the conversation.

I cannot wait for my husband to take my boys. Because you know what they say, "Real guys go to Barber Shops, all others go to Salons."

And finally, Oopsie Daisy is the children's boutique in Daybreak. This place is incredible. beautiful. amazing. They have everything you need from pregnancy all the way through- maternity clothes, furniture, beautiful children's clothes, shoes, toys, and gifts. They are also going to have fun little activites, like a story hour, that your kids will love to go to. Heidi and I have only gotten a glimpse of everything they had to offer- and we were falling over each other weeping with joy.

OSS will have a little partner inside our show as well. Charity Denim will be selling among other things, designer jeans, to raise money for Huntsman Cancer Institute. All of the brands they carry are either made domestically or under safe working conditions (sweatshop free). Because they are last season's overstocks and samples they are able to sell them at amazing prices, between about $45 to $100 dollars.

This weekend's contest if for the dogs. Literally. We have some fun vendors for our furry friends at our SoDa Row Show, and you may be able to get a sampling of what they have to offer- for free!

First up is Woof Ware: Dawn Sontag makes hip, funarific, adjustable collars and leads (is a lead like a leash?) with the highest quality heavy duty nylon webbing, bright, fabulous, stain resistant polyester grosgrain and woven ribbons, beefy contoured “Weinerlock” buckles and cast nickel D-rings, and...UV resistant, outdoor hard-core polyester thread. Next is No More Nekkid Dogs: Jolene Miller got started making jammies and shirts for her Chinese Crested puppies who require clothing in the winter to keep them warm, and in the spring while tanning their bodies slowly so they don't get sunburned. (WTH?) She noticed how they would prance around in whatever she made. One of her other dogs, Lizzy, would sit by her machine and wait for her to get done with what she was making so she could try it on. She loved them (Lizzy, that is.). They make her feel special. (I am totally taking Jolene's word for it.)

That is why she started No More Nekkid Dogs. She wanted to share these items with you and your lovies (doggies). She wants everyone else to experience the love of their dogs the way she does when she puts a new outfit on them or buys something special just for them.

OK friends, I will try to keep this brief. This post will consist of three parts; first, my new found love of cycling, second, my love for Infinite Cycles, and third, lovin' and givin' away a Boot Scoot Bike.

1. A few years ago I fell down my stairs and broke my ankle. It was horrible. My doctor told me I could never run or participate in high impact sports again. Which really was OK because the joke for most of my life was that I would only run if someone was chasing me with a knife. They did talk a lot about how good cycling is for my injury and I thought, "blah, blah, blah." My husband cycles and knowing how 'me on a bike would make his dreams come true' somehow made me even more resistant to the idea.

So, last February he left a flyer for the Little Red Riding Hood Ride on our kitchen counter. I am a total sucker for packaging, pink, women only and a challenge. I decided I would try to see if I could ride the 35 mile route. Little Red has 15, 35, 65, 80, and 100 mile routes to choose from. I thought 35 seemed fairly ambitious, after all it's riding a bike from my house to Provo. I begged my neighbors, sister in law, and even my own mother to do it with me. We rode and rode and rode and I really, REALLY, started to enjoy myself. (and my ankle was feeling awesome- the first time in 3 years, and I lost a little weight) I am really good at going down hill, not so much up them. We ended up doing the 65 mile route in about 5 hours and I am quite proud of myself. Next year we are planning on doing the century and want everyone to join us. Here we are, at the finish line, aren't we cute?

2. I serve on a local committee in Herriman called, Healthy Herriman. (I know it is funny, I mostly do their graphics and advertising) On that committee I met Brad Rowberry, one of the owners of Infinite Cycles. Brad is a great guy (even though he won't give me a new bike) and has a passion for human powered two wheeled conveyances. They have awesome selection, knowledgeable staff, and great customer service. If you are looking for someplace to invest your spending dollars, this just may be the place.

3. Infinite Cycles will be selling, among other things, Boot Scoot Bikes at Oh Sweet Sadie! My daughter learned to ride a two wheeler this summer, mostly due to a Boot Scoot Bike. Watch the video. From their site, "Most children start by walking while straddling their Boot Scoot. When they become more comfortable, they will begin to sit on the seat, push themselves forward, and maintain balance with both feet. As they learn to balance on their own, they will begin to lift their feet for short distances. Before long, they’ll be cruising along and you’ll have to quicken your pace just to keep up. We are getting excited for this unique OSS show... it will be different for us in many ways; first, we have the MOST artisans/ vendors we have ever had, including a grundle you have never seen before. Second, we are throwing a couple parties during the show with uber hip live music (handsome young men playing guitars) and yummy refreshments (make sure you join the mailing list or become a fan of OSS on facebook, to get an invite to the first, everyone is invited to the Wrap Up Party, Saturday 3:00 - 5:00 pm). And third, the location is a new super cool urban retail district- the architecture is funky, the fountain and sculpture are a blast, and have I mentioned the parking? If tricky parking has kept you away from OSS in the past, you won't have an issue here. (Except Saturday morning, the triathlon may be a little tight- it ends at 11:30 am.)

Finally, if anyone knows how to throw a party- it's Daybreak. Saturday is the grand opening of SoDa Row (super cool urban retail district mentioned above), so they will have their own band on deck from noon until 2:00 pm, plus tons of activites you will want to bring your family to participate in (perhaps you could sneak off and shop while your husband watches the kids on the climbing wall, or flying kites.)

OSS artisans and vendors are know for being generous, and this show will be no different. Contests and giveaways will begin in ernest on Tuesday, September 1st. There is jewelry, bikes, furniture, home decor, candy, costumes, and TONS more to giveaway.

We hope everyone is having a lovely summer so far, especially now that the rain has let up a little. My neighborhood is addicted to Daybreak's beach- have you been yet? Your kids will love it. You can play in the sand and jump off the pier, not to mention the fun playground and bike trails- come check it out. (And say hi to me, I am becoming a permanent fixture in the sand.)

Heidi and I are slowly getting back to work. (Congratulations to Heidi who had a beautiful baby girl, Lucy Jane, about 6 weeks ago.) We met with Daybreak last week to start nailing down some specifics of our fall show. Our show will be held in conjuction with the Grand Opening of SoDa (South Daybreak- get it?) Row, September 18th and 19th.

Miss Aly Brooks, one of our favorite people and past vendor will be running Daybreak's first triathalon on Saturday, Septmeber 19th. It will finish in the middle of SoDa Row, hopefully right in front of OSS, so we can all step out to cheer.

SoDa row is shaping up to be a pretty nifty little shopping district. Here is a list of some of the announced tenants, with many more in the works.

Black Diamond Gymnastics and Sport Centers – Will provide gymnastics, dance, cheer and martial arts. It also offers the Kids Klub after school enrichment program, off-track camps for kids, birthday parties, special events and an academic preschool and tutoring program.

Tio’s Mexican Restaurant – A local Mexican restaurant with one other location currently open in Murray.

Classic Cleaners – Dry cleaners priding itself on being an environmentally sensitive cleaner. This will be Classic Cleaners third location in the Valley.

Zion’s Bank – No explanation needed for this one.

Guy’s Barbershop – Guy’s Barbershop will open its first location offering haircuts and straight razor shaves in a traditional one-chair shop.

Oopsie Daisy –A children’s boutique offering distinctive children’s clothes, shoes, gifts and furniture.

San Gelato Café – Italian café offering gelato, panini and many other Italian treats.

We are excited to be included in this awesome event! We are thinking about opening our doors Thursday night for a sneak preview of the show by invitation only. If you want to be invited- make sure you are on our mailing list. Contests will start a couple weeks before the show, so check in on us the beginning of September, until then- see you at the beach!
